PBA SA BIÑAN

PBA Action Goes to Biñan

Biñanenses, just like other Filipinos throughout the country, are avid basketball fanatics. In fact, this seeming national obsession has led a New York-based journalist, Rafe Bartholomew,  to come to the country and experienced for himself the Filipinos’ love for basketball. The output was a book entitled, “Pacific Rims: Beermen Ballin’ in Flip Flops and the Philippines’ Unlikely Love Affair with Basketball.”

In the book, Bartholomew rightly observes that  a basketball court magically materializes in every street corner “where diehards fashion hoops out of old car parts.” Another reviewer writes, “This book is more than just a front-row seat to a body-twisting, triple-clutching, no –look passing basketball world in flip flops. It humanizes a nation..”

Well, what is true about the entire country is magnified many times over in this city of over 300,000 where is hot-blooded Biñanense male and female is a diehard basketball fanatic. No wonder, the management of the Philippine Basketball Association has unofficially anointed the newly-inaugurated Alonte Sports Arena in Brgy. Zapote as its alternative venue for its ongoing conference. After all, the Alonte Sports Arena or the Arena is the only state-of-the-art sporting facility in the entire Laguna Province.

After the very successful out-of-town game last February, the country’s premier professional basketball league is once again holding its out-of-town gigs at the Alonte Spors Arena, which is now touted as the alternative venue for the PBA regular season. This upcoming PBA action will happen on Thursday, May 29, 2014 and on Sunday, June 8, 2014.

The game on May 29 will be a double-header featuring San Miguel Beermen vs Barako Bull, and Rain or Shine vs Talk & Text. Another double-header will banner the PBA action on Sunday, June 8: Barako Bull vs Global Port and Rain or Shine vs Barangay Ginebra.

This early, tickets sales for the two events are going fast and furious. Proof that the City of Biñan is truly a city in full swing.
